Second Team Title Claimed at IBJJF DC Open 2018

On April 7 — 8, 2018, Crazy 88 claimed its second team title at the IBJJF Washington DC Spring Open. Against four other teams with a similar number of competitors, Team Lloyd Irvin, Crazy 88 Elkridge and Owings Mills, and Ivey League MMA won the team titles in Gi and No Gi by double the number of points of the second place teams. While individual competitors made progress of their own, the team as a whole showcased its talent on its home turf.

Day 1 – Gi Competitors

Black Belt Champions

Tim Spriggs won his only match with a 90-second submission to bring home the Gold medal in the Adult Black Belt Super Heavy Division. Spriggs closed out the Black Belt Open Class with teammate Mahamed Aly. He won his first open match with a submission from mount and his second by judge’s decision.

Tye Ryan Murphy won two matches to win Gold in the Masters 1 Black Belt Medium Heavy Division.

Brown Belt Champions

Vannessa Griffin won Gold in the Adult Brown Belt Middle Division. She won her first match 27-0 and her Finals match by choke. She entered the open division later that day and took home the Silver medal in the Brown Belt Open Class, winning her first match via triangle choke and losing the Finals on advantages.

Chris Tran walked away with the Gold medal in the Adult Brown Belt Light Feather Division. Fighting up a weight class, he won one match on advantages.

Jon Delbrugge came home with the Silver medal in the Adult Brown Belt Middle Division. He won his first match by injury DQ of the other opponent.

Dave Zwanetz returned to competition after a several year hiatus. He came home with the Gold medal in the Masters 1 Brown Belt Light Feather Division after winning one match on points.

Randolph Bazile won one match on judge’s decision to bring home the Gold medal in the Master 3 Brown Belt Medium-Heavy Division.

Purple Belt Champions

Byung Ju Lee left with the Gold medal in the Adult Purple Belt Light Division. He won his first and second matches on points. Ju Lee took the last two rounds each winning 6-2 in the SemiFinals and Finals matches.

John Johnson walked away with the Gold medal in the Adult Purple Belt Ultra Heavy Division. He won his first match 6-2 and won the Finals on points.

Eduardo Viana was able to secure the Silver medal in the Adult Purple Belt Medium Heavy Division. He won his first match on points and his second match by bread-cutter submission.

Lakita Patterson came home with the Silver medal in the Adult Purple Belt Middle Division. She won her first match with a kimura submission.

Blue Belt Double Gold Medalists

Leah Mays won her SemiFinals and Finals matches on judge’s decision to win the Gold medal in the Adult Blue Belt Medium-Heavy Division. In the Blue Belt Open Class, she won her first match with an ezekiel submission from mount, the second match on points 12-0, and her third match with a clock choke to return home with Double Gold.

Kayla Dehm won her first match 9-0 in the Adult Blue Belt Heavy Division taking home the Gold medal. She closed out the Blue Belt Open Class with teammate Mays, winning her first match with an arm bar submission and her Finals match on judge’s decision.

Monica Barlow took home Double Gold in the Masters 1 Blue Belt Light Division and Masters 1 Blue Belt Open Class. She submitted all three of her opponents in her weight class via triangle choke. She continued in that fashion submitting two more opponents with triangles and won one on points in the open division.

Blue Belt Champions

In the Blue Belt Divisions, Olivia Obodoagha won Gold in the Adult Super Heavy Division. Obodoagha won all three of her matches on points. She took home the Gold medal winning the finals by a double-digit point lead.

Kayla Dehm also won Gold the Heavy Division and Leah Mays won Medium Heavy.

Brian Anderson won his only match on points to secure the Gold in the Juvenile Blue Belt Light Division.

Stephen Riddle took home the Gold medal in the Master 2 Blue Belt Light Division. He won his first match with a submission and won his second on points.

Jeremy Collins won his first match 8-0 in the Adult Blue Belt Heavy Division. He also won the SemiFinals match 9-0 and took home the Silver medal overall.

Tori Kime won her first match in the Adult Blue Belt Light Feather Division 9-0 with a sticker takedown at the offset. She won her second match 3-2 and took home the Silver medal for the division.

Brett Barkley won his first match on points and took home the Silver medal in the Adult Blue Belt Heavy Division.

Navarro Chamberlain won his first match 12-0 in the Adult Blue Belt Heavy Division. He lost his second 0-2 and took the Bronze medal. Later in the day, Chamberlain entered the Open Class and beat the 2018 IBJJF Pan Championships Silver medalist on points 3-0 with a guard pass, but was stopped in the Quarterfinals.

Anthony Cerlozzi won his first match in the Adult Blue Belt Feather Division with a submission. He also won his second match on points. He brought home the Bronze medal for the day.

Day 2 – White Belts and No Gi

Highlights:

• Tye Ryan Murphy secured the Gold medal in the Masters 1 Black Belt No Gi Division. He won his first by judge’s decision and the second match 2-0.
• Tial Zathang won the Adult White Belt Middle Division. He took Gold after winning his first match 9-4, his second by loop choke, his third by advantages, and his fourth 9-0 on points.
• Byung Ju Lee won one match by judge’s decision to take Gold in the Adult Purple Belt Medium Heavy No Gi Division fighting up two weight classes.
• Brian Anderson won one match via triangle choke to bring home Gold in the Juvenile Blue Belt No Gi Light Division.

Meghan Sirico brought home the Silver medal in the Adult Blue Belt Light Feather No Gi Division. She won her first match on points and lost in the Finals by an advantage.

Filipe Moreno won his first match by Americana and his next two matches on points. He brought home the Silver medal in the Adult White Belt Medium Heavy Division

Khalil Hider took home the Silver medal in the Adult White Belt Light Feather Division. He won his first match by kimura and his second by arm bar submission. He got stopped in the finals.

Mark Banks won his first match 12-0. He took home the Silver medal in the Master 1 White Belt Feather Division. He suffered a major injury in the first match but kept fighting until the end.

Dana Whiting won his first match 3-2. He brought home the Bronze medal for the Master 2 White Belt Medium Heavy Division.
